EVENT: Empty Bowls Bahamas

EMPTY BOWLS BAHAMAS holds its signature event annually in the month of February. The first event was held in the year 2009 and therefore Empty Bowl Bahamas celebrated its 5th Anniversary on the 24th of February 2013. The concept behind Empty Bowls, is for artists, volunteers and groups to create and donate bowls, then serve a Bahamian soup of choice, along with rolls and a Bahamian “Bush” tea. Guests choose a unique bowl on the day of the event and keep it as a reminder of all the EMPTY BOWLS IN THE BAHAMAS and THE WORLD AT LARGE.

Date: Sunday February 23rd 2014
Time: 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Venue: Queens College Auditorium (Village Road)
Tickets: $15

The original project of “Empty Bowls” was initiated by Art Lecturer Mr. John Hartom in 1990-1 when he joined a drive to raise charitable funds in his Michigan community. This project, is now held throughout many areas in the United States and Canada. Mrs. Joann Behagg, a ceramicist, and Art Lecturer brought this wonderful concept to The Bahamas.

Guests make a donation towards their ceramic bowl and receive free soup, roll and tea. Proceeds from the event are devoted to local hunger-fighting organizations such as The Great Commission Ministries International, Eljhay’s Hilltop Cottage Ministries, and one of the Family Islands that was significantly affected by a Hurricane storm via The Methodist Habitat For Humanity just to name a few. The funds raised from the 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 events were donated to the Salvation Army (New Providence and Grand Bahama), The Great Commission Ministries International and The Haitian Relief Fund via The Methodist Habitat for Humanity. We realize the great demand always placed on corporate sponsorship therefore, from the commencement of Empty Bowls Bahamas, we have taken the self-help approach and regularly hold patio/bake sales as pre-fundraisers for the annual Empty Bowls Bahamas event. Nevertheless, as mini fundraisers do not cover all the costs to put on an event such as this, public support is usually solicited.
